French-Canadian director Denis Villenueve commends the work of "The Young Victoria" actress Emily Blunt with her character in the gripping drug-war film "Sicario." Villenueve states that Blunt had all the qualities he was looking for to do the part properly. "So the audience won't see a movie star. They'll see a female cop. That was very important to me," he said.
Villenueve says that he has found Blunt remarkable in Jean-Marc Vallee's 2009 movie, "The Young Victoria." He states that he was blown away with Blunt's strong position of vulnerability and at the same time the inner strength that was present and vibrant in the film.
In "Sicario," Blunt plays a naïve and idealistic FBI agent Kate Macer who was enlisted by an elite government task force official to aid in the escalating war against drug trafficking between Mexico and the United States. Blunt, and her FBI partner in the film, Daniel Kaluuya was immersed and trained with FBI officers. Blunt spoke to four FBI women and based her character from one of them.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the English-American actress shared: "You really understood how all-encompassing it is, how consuming, how taxing, how difficult it is to detach from work, how hard it is on your social life, on your relationships, on your personal life." She added that her interaction with real-life police force officers is very helpful in portraying her role. Blunt who had just received American citizenship started shooting for the film four months after she delivered her first baby girl, Hazel.
Villeneuve shared his thoughts about Blunt's character Kate Macer, stating that at the end, she represents hope. He pronounces that Kate's decision at the end of the film means that she is different and will come back to her moral values. "Even if you may feel that she's less strong it's the opposite," the director added.
Denis Villeneuve is collaborating with cinematographer Roger Deakins. They also will be working together on the new "Blade Runner" movie. "Sicario" also stars A-listers Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jon Bernthal, Victor Garber and Jeffrey Donovan, among others. The film will hit the theaters nationwide on October 2.
