There has been quite an interval between Seasons 3 and 4 of "Sherlock" that fans have understandably took that to mean that the show might have already been cancelled. Showrunner Steven Moffat dismissed the cancellation rumors and reassured the show's loyal fans that there will be a Season 4. The upcoming season is rumored to be darker than the previous seasons.

However, Ecumenical News reports that Moffat, while revealing the show's return at the same time admitted that they have not started writing a script yet much more started filming.

In another article this time with Yibada , when Moffat was asked when he thinks filming will start, his reply was, "I think we're shooting next year, April-ish".

Same article also reports that Moffat is denying another rumor about the crossover of his two popular shows, "Dr. Who" and "Sherlock". He said that he is not sold to the idea although a crossover of the two shows is every fan's ultimate dream.

In his recent interview with Collider, Moffat explained that the meeting of the two protagonists of the shows will cause serious confusion because Sherlock will need to time travel to be able to meet Dr. Who. He added that the two protagonists are more than enough to run their own shows without the need for the other to make an appearance in the other's show.

Moffat also touched on a one episode "Sherlock" special set in the Victorian era which will reunite Sherlock and Watson and is set to air on Christmas of 2015.. No official synopsis has been released for the Christmas special but it is said to be based on the short story "The Red-Headed League".

Season 4 of "Sherlock" is not expected to air until 2017 based on Moffat's declarations. At least, the fans have the Christmas special to look forward to.
