‘Aquaman’ Updates: Jason Momoa teases superhero costume for DC’s standalone film; Darker and grittier live-action characterization possible

By

"Aquaman" leading actor Jason Momoa hinted a few details of his superhero costume for the upcoming big-screen adaptation of the popular comic book character. He may lend a darker and grittier live-action characterization for the upcoming installment in the DC shared universe.

According to Coming Soon, Momoa gave some hints of his superhero outfit for the upcoming standalone film scheduled to be released sometime in 2018. He said, "Well, there might be some bit of orange and green... A bit of respect to prior work, but I think he is meaner now and upset - look at what has been done to our oceans. That's his world that has been polluted." He also confirmed that action figures of his character may be released some time before Christmas.

The 36-year old model and actor will be portraying the titular King of Atlantis Aquaman. In the comic books, Aquaman is the telepathic ruler of the legendary realm of Atlantis possessing the biological qualities of undersea creatures as well as superhuman levels of strength, endurance, and speed. He also has advanced levels of hearing and smell, exceptional vision, heat resistance as well as the ability to command all marine life.

Aquaman, otherwise called Arthur Curry due to his human upbringing, is the founding member of the Justice League of America. The character made his debut in the 1960s and has long been part of the Justice League's adventures during the Silver Age, according to Moviepilot. Although Aquaman is a widely recognized figure in popular culture, his wholesome portrayal had been ridiculed until he was rebooted as a fiercer character in modern comic book depictions.

Momoa may be an unusual choice for a fictional superhero depicted as a blonde haired, blue-eyed Atlantean. He is of native Hawaiian descent and is well-known for his bulked-up roles in films and television series including "Stargate Atlantis", "Game of Thrones" and "Conan the Barbarian."

An article by Cheat Sheet suggested that Momoa's casting may be in tune with DC's dark and atmospheric tones in subsequent films. He may lend a more brutal characterization as a big-screen Aquaman reminiscent of the "Flashpoint" comic book arc written by Geoff Johns. In the alternate timeline, the Atlantean engages in a war so vicious that it threatens to destroy all humanity.

"Aquaman" is a science-fiction adventure film slated for release on July 27, 2018. The upcoming addition to DC's shared universe will be directed by James Wan.
