Oliver Stone's "Snowden" will be reportedly released on May 2016 after being moved from its Christmas Day premiere date last month. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and is about the life of Edward Snowden, the infamous government whistleblower.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, "Snowden" was first pitted to hit theaters for Christmas of this year. However, the film will not be reportedly finished in time, risking the chance of the movie in getting an Oscar award. It is worth noting that last year, "Citizenfour," which focused on the real Snowden, won the Oscar award for the best documentary.
Reports claim that Oliver Stone used two different Snowden books - namely, "The Snowden Files" by Luke Harding and "Time of the Octopus" by Anatoly Kucherena. Penning the script is Kieran Fitzgerald. It is also believed that Gordon-Levitt himself went to meet the fugitive Snowden.
Screen Crush, on the other hand, believed that such adjustment is good for the movie, as Christmas will be definitely crowded with other films. The forthcoming "Snowden" would have been fighting against "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "The Revenant," "The Hateful Eight," "Joy," "Daddy's Home," and "Sisters." With this kind of line up, The film's political drama would most definitely be out of context.
"Snowden" centers on the life of Edward Snowden, a government whistleblower infamous for leaking classified documents and information to the media, as reported by Deadline. Shailene Woodley will play as Snowden's girlfriend, along with Nicolas Cage, Zachary Quinto, Melissa Leo, Scott Eastwood and Tom Wilkinson.
For the time being, the only other big films confirmed to open on May 2016 are Paramount's next "Friday the 13th" movie and Marvel's "Captain America: Civil War." The latter will be released a week earlier on May 6.
There were no further details as to why "Snowden" was moved next year. Nonetheless, this gives the Oliver Stone and the rest of his production team enough time to showcase Edward Snowden's life in a remarkable way.
