‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Updates: Jude Law pitches time-travel story to Guy Richie; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s estate sues 'Mr. Holmes'

'Sherlock Holmes 3' actor Jude Law pitched a time-travel story to incorporate into the franchise's original storyline. Director Guy Richie was not a fan of the idea. The estate of original character creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle recently sued another film, 'Mr. Holmes'. for a copyright infringement.

According to an article by Cinema Blend, Jude Law suggested a new twist for the plot of the third installment in the action-mystery film series to director Guy Richie who he worked with in the past two films 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows'. The 42-year old actor, who plays Sherlock's companion and close friend Dr. John Watson, admitted that he thought the idea of time travel would shake things up.

Law said, "Yeah, I thought [we could] sort of combine H.G. Wells and Sherlock Holmes. And then Downey topped it by going, 'Yeah, and the time travel machine is... it's something you eat.' I wonder what he's referring to there? I don't know. You eat it and you go, 'Oh my God, I'm in 2024!'" He was even amazed at how his pitch leaked since he was trying to keep the whole affair private.

It was reported by Movie News Guide that Richie didn't seem too keen on following through with Law's idea of a Victorian Era-Futuristic World mash-up. The director confessed, "Jude always had good ideas, surprisingly good, and came up with good lines too. But the time travel one was not the zenith of his ideas."

Richie didn't seem to be the only concerned party showing disapproval for the direction a certain 'Sherlock Holmes' adaptation was taking. According to Variety, the Conan Doyle estate sued Miramax, Roadside Attractions and filmmaker Bill Condon over their independent film 'Mr. Holmes' for copyright infringement. It was reported, however, that the involved parties have reached a settlement.

The other live-action adaptation would feature Sir Ian McKellen as an aged mentally deteriorating Sherlock who struggles to look back on his pursuits and exploits from his younger days. The film is based on Mitch Cullin's 'A Slight Trick of Mind', a publication remaining under Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's copyright.

'Sherlock Holmes 3' is a planned thriller-mystery detective film set to star Law as Dr. John Watson and Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes. The film is currently in development with the script penned by Drew Pearce and Lionel Wigram.
