Android 6.0 Marshmallow is now available for the Google Play edition of the HTC One M8, and can now finally be downloaded by its users over the air.
HTC's VP of product management, Mo Versi, announced through a tweet last November 6 that the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for the HTC One M8 Google Play Edition has finally arrived, says Tech Times.
Originally slated to be released in October, the update was slightly delayed indefinitely by the device builder, which disappointed many anticipating HTC One M8 GPE owners. However, HTC One M8 GPE users can now get the firmware update, which GSM Arena reports to be around 450MB in size.
HTC One M8 GPE was released in March of 2014 with Android Kitkat 4.4. The device sports a 5 inch screen with a 1920 x 1080 resolution and 441 pixel per inch density. The CPU is a 2.3 GHz Quad-core with 2GB of RAM.
The Google Play Edition, when unlocked, supports quad-band GSM/GPSRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900MHz), quad-band HSPA/UMTS (50/1700/1900/2100MHz) and LTE (700/1700MHz). The camera has the unique 4-Megapixel sensor and Duo Cam depth sensor that the non-GPE version of the device has.
According to Mobile Burn, the update will require Wi-Fi connection to access the update over the air (OTA), while keeping the battery at at least 50% for the firmware to be successfully updated without running low on battery.
The Google Play Edition was created to support a bloatware-free, raw Android version of the firmware in HTC-build phones. With this in consideration, users have assumed that the device would be getting updates earlier given that the OEM would no longer have to intensely tweak and develop the firmware the way one would have just to fit the preferences of third-party providers.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow will continue to roll out as many other OEMs are releasing Beta tests and announcing public launches mostly slated for early next year, which actually makes Lenovo a relatively late player in the area of the firmware update.
