Nicholas Sparks may be known for his romantic drama literature which has swept readers off their feet, but it seems like love doesn't have a happy ending for the 49-year-old author. Reports are saying that Sparks has called it quits with his wife of 25 years, Cathy.
Exclusively speaking to People, the author of "The Notebook" revealed, "Cathy and I have separated." Sparks adds, "This is, of course, not a decision we've made lightly. We remain close friends with deep respect for each other and love for our children. For our children's sake, we regard this as a private matter."
People reports that Cathy was a source of inspiration for many of Sparks' best-selling novels. In an interview with New York Daily News in October 2013, Sparks said, "Every morning when I wake up and see my wife. That is the kind of love that I write about in the novels." He also revealed that some of the examples from his own life he had used as inspiration for his stories.
Since the news of Sparks' separation made waves online, The Huffington Post reports that fans expressed their thoughts on Twitter regarding the issue. Some fans reactions ranged from having a hard time trusting the romance writer again. Twtter user @LeeEliz said, "Nicholas Sparks and his wife are separating. I don't even know how to process trusting his love stories anymore," to some users such as @gaaabrielllaaa even giving up entirely on Sparks tweeting, "Nicholas Sparks getting divorced is tragic...if the master of love stories can't keep his wifey around, we are all doomed."
Meanwhile, TMZ reports that the "A Walk to Remember" author's separation was done months ago with huge financial repercussions. The site reported that it had obtained a postmarital agreement filed back in August by Sparks and his wife. The report says, "They acknowledge neither has a claim on the assets the other accumulates after their separation." This leads TMZ to speculate that the couple had "worked out a property settlement agreement" and that his wife got "a big chunk of change."
Sparks' novels and film adaptations include "Message in a Bottle," "Nights in Rodanthe," and "The Wedding." He wed Cathy in 1989 and has three sons and two daughters.
