Guardians of the Galaxy 2 director James Gunn revealed that the highly anticipated release will start shooting in February, 2016. Unlike its prequel, 2014's summer blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, the film will be shot not in the UK but in the US, at Pinewood Atlanta Studios - the same filming location used for Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War.
While the release of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is still two years away, the director/writer decided to delight fans by sharing further updates on the upcoming superhero film. Late last week, Gunn took to social media video app Periscope to answer some fan questions, including the filming date and location, as reported by Superhero Hype.
Gunn also offered an update on the sequel's story treatment and script, revealing he had turned in his treatment to the Marvel Studios and they will begin working on the screenplay this week. According to the site, Gunn shared they're approximately 70 pages deep into the screenplay and described pitching the sequel to Marvel as the "best experience he ever had with a pitch."
The director also confirmed the return of villain Nebula, played by Karen Gillan. Yet, the sequel will no longer see Guardians of the Galaxy's main villain Ronan, played by Lee Pace, according to Blastr. While Ronan is a recurring character in the comics, Gunn quickly reminded fans that "not everything is going to happen in the movies the same as the comics."
On the other hand, Nebula has always had more chances of returning for the sequel. It was reported here earlier that the character is confirmed to return for the upcoming film. Gillan will reprise her role, and in an interview the actress shared her thoughts on playing her villainous character without having to shave her head.
"I have a physical and emotional attachment to this hair. We'll have to see if I have to shave it. Maybe CGI will have developed further by the time we shoot it," the Scottish actress said.
Gillan's wish may probably be granted, after all, as Gunn mentioned in his video that they may have figured out a way for her to return as Nebula without having her head shaved, according to Superhero Hype. Aside from Gillan, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will feature once again Chris Patt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel as the titular characters. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
