HTC Vive: Features SteamVR System, Interchangeable Faceplates; Receives Elite: Dangerous Soon

HTC's virtual reality headset is set to be released worldwide in the first quarter of 2016. However, extremely limited quantities are said to be out later this year. Though HTC Vive might not be the most attractive looking headset on the market, still it aims a premium virtual reality experience for each user.

The HTC Vive is expected to come with interchangeable faceplates to help soften and personalize the appearance of the odd-shaped virtual reality device. It will also be supported by Valve's SteamVR system and will come with two sensor-loaded batons to let users interact with the virtual world.

Furthermore, it features Room Scale user-tracking that allows users to move around in a 15-feet by 15-feet environment, position-tracked controllers that bring hand presence within VR to users, as well as 1080 by 1200 pixels resolution per eye. As previously reported by VCPost, this virtual reality system has a frame rate of 90Hz and a hand-tracking feature courtesy of two motion wands with complement of triggers, buttons, and track pads.

The HTC Vive's initial design is described as a pock-marked, spherical headset with two satellite dish-like controllers and a pair of matchbox-size "Lighthouse" beacons. However, the final build is said to come with built-in headphones and more polished controllers.

According to some reports, the space combat simulator, Elite: Dangerous, will also be coming to HTC Vive fairly soon. It was officially announced on Twitter by Frontier PR, Michael Gapper, that Elite: Dangerous is coming to SteamVR and HTC Vive with a free update later this year. Moreover, HTC Vive will be the first non-Rift headset that Elite will support.

On the whole, HTC Vive is one big competitor to its rivals, the Oculus Rift and Sony's PlayStation VR. The battle of the greatest virtual reality headsets will be seen next year. Thus, everyone will then find out which is really the best in virtual gaming industry.
